Cairngorms on Horseback

COH-capture

The Cairngorms National Park has some of the most spectacular scenery in the world and what better way to enjoy it than on horseback, discover some of the world's most dramatic mountains, rivers and glens on horseback. Several of the paths still used for trekking were originally cattle droving roads. Today, these tracks still cross the open moors and high passes so that from the saddle you can glimpse some of Scotland's truly secret places. Pony trekking is said to have started in the Cairngorms in 1952, and was pioneered in Badenoch with the sturdy Highland ponies that worked alongside deer stalkers, carrying stags off the hill. There are a variety of Trekking and Riding Centres in the Cairngorms National Park, offering everything from short treks to long-distance rides over several days and even carriage driving. Newtonmore Riding Centre is one of the 8 centres that makes up "Cairngorms on Horseback", the other centres are located near Aviemore in the Badenoch and Strathspey area as well as at Tomintoul, Glen Tanar, Blair Atholl and Balmoral. Some of the centres are open all year round and offer riding whatever the weather, within reason !

This year 2012 is the 60th Anniversay of Pony Trekking and our family were the pioneers and have been offering pony trekking and riding holidays since 1952 from Newtonmore and from the 1960's at our Riding Centre in Aviemore, where pony trekking was still always the main activity. We will have a big celebration at Newtonmore to commemorate this Pony Trekking Milestone in September 2012. So if you are in the Aviemore, Badenoch and Starthspey Area and want to come pony trekking or horse riding or want a riding lesson please come and see us and we will glady show you round our small heritage centre too.
